Coaching Philosophy and Strategy
In the younger age groups most club teams play a full-court pressure game leading to fast paced lopsided games where the team with the best press breaking offense usually comes out on top. The high school age groups must develop all the skills necessary to play in this highly competitive league and are not limited to any one style of play. Our teams will be expected to implement such a style of basketball in order to compete in all age groups with the other AAU clubs. Man-to-man defenses, full-court trapping defense, as well as multiple zone defenses will be used by all Twister teams. It will be the responsibility of the coaches to develop the team members' individual character, physical skills, and knowledge of the game of basketball. At its best, basketball is a team game. Success is built on disciplined practice which in turn leads to success in games and renews commitment to practicing. Alabama Twister coaches will be responsible for assessing penalties for improper behavior or violations of club guidelines. Conflicting coaching ideas, concepts, or techniques will not be taught. All coaches will share common beliefs about teaching of fundamental concepts, therefore providing a continuous and proper learning environment. Our method of instruction shall include: Tell, Show, Drill. Tell shall include verbal instruction or copies of plays that can be studied at home. Showing shall take place by coaches or assistants and repeated by players. Drill shall include the use of the specific fundamental and repeated many times to insure proper execution. Alabama Twister coaches will all meet regularly to discuss team philosophy and strategy.

PARENTS - Alabama Twisters Basketball Club parents must build up and support their player, other team members, coaches, and parents of other team members. Parents are also responsible for providing suitable arrangements for the lodging, meals, and transportation of their player to practices, clinics, and tournaments. ATBC parents are expected to abstain from unprofessional conduct such as: disrespect toward or harassment of game officials, fans, athletes, or coaches; ethnic or racial slurs; and unsportsmanlike conduct. We expect parents to get involved with their player in practice at home. Set a positive example for players by refraining from using alcohol or tobacco products in the presence of players at anytime. Get to know other parents involved with the ATBC.
FUND RAISING
The money needed to provide equipment and tournament entry fees and other necessary expenses comes from fees the players pay to join the club, and from a fund raising program. All players and parents are expected to participate in the fund raising program. Each player is required to raise a minimum amount of money each year. This amount shall be determined by the board of directors and the fund raising committee. Without the fundraising program, the cost per player to participate in our club would be exorbitant!
Corporate Sponsors - During the year, the Alabama Twisters will conduct a corporate sponsorship drive to attract funding for the club. Local businesses will be able to become a Alabama Twisters sponsor with varying benefits determined by the level of sponsorship the business chooses. The Alabama Twisters is a non-profit, 501-C-3 organization founded in 2000. Corporate sponsorship may be tax deductible as an advertising expense. Fund raising may include but is not limited to: Hosting a tournament, coupon books, candy sales, car washes, raffle tickets or other fund raising programs decided on by the fund raising committee.
Winter Team Tryouts
During the month of October an open tryout will be held if necessary for players in the 4th, 5th and 6th grade for a spot on a competitive team which will participate in a local competitive basketball league. These teams will be open for a limited number of players. Winter league costs for individual player will be $80.00 used for league fees the use of a reversible jersey and other tournaments during winter. Custom uniforms are paid for at the players expense Inexpensive uniforms will be appropriate for this league. After players are selected, teams will begin practicing in early November. Playing on a team in the winter league does not guarantee the player a spot on the tournament teams selected during the spring pre-season workouts described below. The club is not responsible for providing or purchasing gym space for any teams playing for the Alabama Twisters Basketball Club.
Spring Team Tryout ---------Spring Pre-Season Workouts--------Final Roster
Spring Team Tryouts - Open tryouts for the Alabama Twisters will be held at various locations in Jefferson and surrounding counties beginning in February for younger age groups. Open tryouts for older age groups will take place as soon as school seasons have been completed. Players wishing to make a Twisters team in the 10u-12u age groups must make the initial spring tryout or make arrangements for a private tryout with a specific coach. In the Twisters Elite 13 u -18u divisions returning players from the previous season may be automatically invited to spring pre-season workouts and may not be required to attend an initial tryout depending on the coach. A $10.00 fee will we charged to tryout for the Alabama Twisters Spring Competitive Teams. This fee will be charged to all players even those players that have private tryouts. These fees will go into the general account and be used to cover club expenses. Alabama Twister coaches will be on hand at these sessions to determine if a potential player has the necessary fundamental skills or raw talent to succeed during the Alabama Twisters' spring pre-season workouts. Players need only attend one tryout session, and a tryout fee may be required. If, in the opinion of the coaching staff, the player has the potential to earn a roster spot on a Alabama Twisters team, an invitation will be issued to attend the Alabama Twisters' spring pre-season workouts. Once a player has been selected to attend the spring pre-season workouts, an AAU membership application must be completed and a $14.00 AAU membership fee must be paid before a player can participate. In the event the player does not make the final Alabama Twisters roster, the AAU membership fee is non-refundable.
Alabama Twisters' Spring Pre-Season Workouts -
Spring pre-season tryouts and workouts for players in the 7th, 8th, 9th grade and high school will begin as soon as their school basketball season has ended. Actual practice dates will be included in your invitation if available. High school players whose team is involved in playoffs will be excused from workouts during playoffs. Alabama Twister coaches will attend playoff games to evaluate their performance. The spring pre-season workouts will consist of multiple two hour sessions over a three week period during the month of March, some age group specific and others with multiple age groups attending. Players selected to attend the Alabama Twisters' spring pre-season workouts must have a current AAU membership or they will not be allowed on the court.
Alabama Twister coaches may make cuts at any time during the spring pre-season workouts, and even during early spring season tournaments, up until the final roster deadline. The final roster deadline will be set by the individual coach. This date should be at least one week prior to the first AAU sanctioned tournament in which the team will participate. Players will not be billed for player fees or uniforms until they have been notified that they have made the final roster. Uniforms for some of the age groups may remain property of the Alabama Twisters Basketball Club and a user fee will be charged to the player. Once final rosters are posted players will be issued player membership cards and parents will be invited to become members. All Alabama Twisters' spring pre-season workouts will be closed to the public. Only registered players and Alabama Twisters staff will be allowed inside the gym during these sessions.
Tournament Teams
At the end of tryouts and spring pre-season workouts, rosters will be announced for the Alabama Twister tournament teams. Selections will be based on coaches evaluation of performance during the winter school season or the spring pre-season tryout period, the spring pre-season workouts, and on a player-parent interview to be conducted during that period. Certain players in all age groups may be asked to join a Alabama Twisters roster as a "developmental" player. These players will be on the tournament roster and will participate in all practices. They may not see very much, if any, playing time in critical games. They will be selected for their attitude and basketball potential. Parents will be notified prior to roster selection if their daughter is to be considered a "developmental" player.
A full AAU roster consists of fifteen players. It is the intention of the Alabama Twisters to have up to 12 players on each team. The remaining three slots will be used to pick up players from another team to go to the AAU National Tournament. . In the event there are more than twelve qualified players in an age group, or coaches find it necessary to have more than one team in a particular age group for any reason, at the clubs discretion, the Alabama Twisters may recruit an additional coach and form a second team. The best players, as determined by the Alabama Twisters coaching staff, would be on the team designated primary, with the rest on the secondary team. Under no circumstances would the organization attempt to balance the talent between the teams as this would lead to two very average teams, without a good chance of having a Alabama Twisters team able to contend for the state championship at that age level. Both teams would compete as the Alabama Twisters with the additional designation of uniform color added to the name (i.e. Alabama Twisters Red, Alabama Twisters White, etc.). Coaches and staff decisions are final as to which players would be on which teams. The Alabama Twisters reserve the right to add players to the tournament teams who did not participate in initial tryouts at any time up to the roster deadlines as allowed by the Amateur Athletic Union. The final tournament teams are expected to participate in the AAU Southeastern Sub-state Championships and either the Alabama AAU State Championships, or the Alabama AAU State Consolation tournament. Any game missed by a player in either of these tournaments shall be treated as a missed practice as covered under Practice Requirements and Playing Time.

PARENT PARTICIPATION OPPORTUNITIES
Alabama Twister parents are openly encouraged to participate in our club. There are many areas where parents can contribute, whether skilled in basketball or not.
They include:
Assistant coaches - Parents can help with drills during practice and assist on the bench during games, attending to injured players, supplying towels and water, encouraging the team, tracking substitutions, etc. Parents should always ask permission of coaches before getting involved in games or practices.
Statisticians - Game stats are an important part of developing players. To accurately track player performance, we need two stat keepers per game.
Trainer - Anyone who knows CPR and has a basic background in first aid is welcome to volunteer for this position. Unfortunately, our girls do risk injury every time they step on the court. A background in weight lifting would also be helpful for this position as you could develop a strength training program for each girl and supervise their progress.
Team videographer - Video tapes of games are an exceptional tool to aid the coach in determining areas needing improvement. If you don't have a camcorder, we'll furnish one.
Fund Raising Committee - Parents who serve on this committee would be in charge of carrying out the current fund raising plan, and developing new methods for obtaining funds for the club.
Solicit Donations of Consumables - We use tons of bottled water, towels, and first aid supplies (especially cold packs) during the season. If you know a business person who sells these things. Don't be shy. Ask for a case of water, or something else.
Other Committees - Parents also have the opportunity to serve on the Tournament Committee, the Recruiting Committee, or the Publications Committee.
GIRLS/BOYS NATIONAL TOURNAMENT POSSIBILITIES
There are two major national tournaments that are the ultimate objective for the Alabama Twisters in each age group. Any Alabama Twister team that qualifies for an invitation to either of these tournaments will be expected to launch a fund raising effort and plan to attend. For high school players we encourage teams to attend exposer events whenever possible to increase their chances of being recognized by college coaches. Exposure events are very important and may require fundraising events as well.
AAU Boys'/Girls' National Basketball Championships. Bids for this tournament go to the top finishers in the Alabama AAU State Championship tournament. Being invited to this tournament is the ultimate prize... a chance to play against the best of the best. Dates and locations for each age group can be found in the center section of this booklet or on the AAU Website at:
http://www.aaugirlsbasketball.org or http://www.aauboysbasketball.org
AAU Boys'/Girls' National Invitational Championships. This is a major tournament designed for the "best of the rest", teams that qualify for their state championship but do not qualify for the AAU Nationals. Alabama Twister teams who do not qualify for the state championship tournament have a chance to qualify by winning their age division's consolation tournament. Dates and locations for each age group can be found in the center section of this booklet.
YBOA Boys'/Girls' National Basketball Championships. The Alabama Twisters, as a club, will not participate in YBOA competition. We will maintain a club membership in Youth Basketball of America in the event any individual team wishes to compete in a YBOA sanctioned tournament. That team will be responsible for their players individual membership fees. The level of competition is about equal to the AAU division II. For dates and time of tournaments see their Website at http://www.yboa.org
COST TO PARTICIPATE
Fall/Winter Season (August 1-March 1)
Winter league costs for individual player will be $80.00 used for league fees the use of a reversible jersey and other tournaments during winter. Custom uniforms are paid for at the players expense. Inexpensive uniforms will be appropriate for this league.
Spring Season (March 1-May 31)
Players selected for the Alabama Twisters spring tournament teams can expect the following expenses:
ATBC Player Fee of $180.00 (2008)
Uniform Cost $80.00 Twisters or yearly uniform rental fee of $40 Twisters Elite (uniform returned after each tournament/game)
AAU Membership $14.00
Fundraising For Team $50.00 (Required to Maintain Club Membership and Scholarship)
Other Team Expenses not covered by the ATBC Player Fees (Travel expenses, Extra tournament fees, gym rental, equipment and supplies etc.)
The AAU membership is required at the first practice and can be purchased on-line at the AAU website. Each player is required to participate in fund-raising activities to maintain membership as mentioned above. ATBC player fees will be used for the Alabama YBOA or AAU regional and state (championship or consolation) tournaments, our share of entry fees for all locally produced Twister tournaments, one additional tournament, and a small amount toward club operating costs and the Alabama Twisters Scholarship Fund.
It is our intention for our fund raising program to provide entry fees and coaches expenses for all other tournaments. In the event fund raising has fallen short and a team plans to participate in a tournament, each player on that team will be assessed an equal share of that tournaments' entry fee (usually $150-250) and the coaches travel expenses (maximum of $85 per night). Player fees are due and payable within ten days of notification that a player has made the team. The club is not responsible for providing or purchasing gym space for any teams playing for the Alabama Twisters Basketball Club. Players are responsible for purchasing new and replacement uniforms. No player who is selected to play on a Alabama Twisters tournament team will be turned away because of financial hardship. Parents may feel free to discuss your situation confidentially with the on/off court club directors. Only these two directors will know who, if anyone, is playing on a "scholarship". Player assistance may be available each season and is determined by the amount placed in the account by players membership dues. Assistance is limited by the number of players contributing to the account and is only available for up to 2 players per team when available. A monthly payment plan is also available for parents/players. Coaches (head coach and first assistant coach) and parents with multiple club players will be eligible for a $50.00 discount per player.
Summer Season (June 1-July 31)
Teams qualifing for national tournament will continue practice and prepare for tournaments during the summer. Money needed to participate in summer activities should be raised during this time.
PRACTICE REQUIREMENTS AND PLAYING TIME
Playing time for players is determined by the head coach of each team. Playing time issues shall only be discussed with the head coach. Once each tournament team roster is announced, coaches should begin keeping attendance records at practice. In order to play in tournament games, a player must have a cumulative practice attendance record of 80%. No special consideration will be given to "star" players. Only players that travel long distances will be excused from practice but must show effort to attend weekend practices when available. Absences may be excused at the coaches discretion only for illness, unavoidable family situations, or school conflicts. Tournament or rec. league softball, volleyball or soccer games or practices will not be excused absences. Players should plan to practice at least once per week during the playing season, and more during weeks leading up to a major tournament.
AAU is the highest level of basketball available in our age groups. There is no "pay for play" as in recreational basketball. Coaches are not required to play all players in each game. Alabama Twisters coaches are going to use available player resources as necessary when a game is winnable. There will be players on younger rosters designated as "developmental." If your daughter/son is one of these, don't be disappointed if she/he doesn't get into the "big game." There are plenty of games and scrimmages in which all players will see game action.
THE PLAYING SEASON
The Alabama Twisters "winter season" begins with open tryouts, if necessary, after August 1 and initial practices beginning in October or November. League play will begin in late December and typically last though the month of February. These winter leagues are reserved for players not playing on middle, junior or high school teams.
The Alabama Twisters "spring season" begins as soon as school ball is over (Officially on March 1 )and the teams are selected. Some tournaments may be played in March before final cuts are made. These will be used as part of the tryout process. Most Alabama Twister teams will all compete in the AAU Alabama Southeastern Region State Qualifier in April, and, depending on how each team finishes, either the Alabama AAU State Championship tournament, or a State AAU consolation tournament in May. Teams will also compete in selected AAU tournaments during April and May, based on the quality of competition available and proximity to Jefferson County. Entry in tournaments that require overnight travel will be kept to a minimum. We will try to travel at least once during the season in order to expose our players to teams outside our region (ex. GA, TN, MS, FL)
The "spring season" will come to an end with the State Championship or State Consolation tournament UNLESS a team qualifies for one of the three major national tournaments. Any Alabama Twister team that qualifies for the AAU National Championships, the AAU National Invitational Championships, or the YBOA National Championships will be expected to participate. Teams not qualifying for national tournaments may be scheduled for other tournaments during this time. The official end of the Spring Season is May 31 of each year.
The Alabama Twister "summer season" will consist of weekly practices and at least one tournament per month. Players are encouraged to attend the basketball camp of their choice at least once during the summer.
End of the Season
Teams that do not qualify for national tournaments that carry over into the next season will surrender all financial assets (money/checkbooks/basketballs/uniforms/equipment etc.) after the season and prepare for the next playing season. If the coach decides not to coach the same team or if the team folds, all financial assets shall be transferred to the Alabama Twisters General Account and will be used for general club expenses. Please do not try to "drain" the account by making purchases that are not approved by the team representative or by the board of directors. At no time should you give money donated to the Alabama Twisters Basketball Club to parents of players or players. This will make book keeping very difficult for us and may not be a legal use of donated money.
DISCLAIMERS AND WAIVERS/PARENTAL CONSENT

In addition, I agree not to pursue any claims for accident or injury against any other group or organization providing practice facilities or equipment for the Alabama Twisters. I understand that my son's/daughter's membership in the Amateur Athletic Union and Youth Basketball of America provides supplemental insurance for medical bills resulting from injuries caused in accidents during sanctioned practices or competitions of either organization. I further recognize that I must first file a claim with my son's/daughter's primary health insurer to be eligible for benefits from the sanctioning bodies. I further agree that I will not allow my son/daughter to participate in any Alabama Twisters activity that directly conflicts with any school basketball event (game, practice, etc.) that he/she is required to attend.

I understand that this consent is perpetual, that I may not revoke it, and that it is binding on my heirs

Special Notice:
Purchasing your AAU membership through the Alabama Twister organization does not obligate you to play for the Alabama Twisters. A player can have their membership transferred to another AAU club upon written request to our business manager up until he/she has played in an AAU sanctioned event with the Alabama Twisters. At that time, according to AAU rules, he/she becomes "attached" to the Alabama Twister organization and cannot join or compete with another AAU basketball team for a period of 60 days. Each time a player competes in an AAU sanctioned event with the Alabama Twisters, his/her attachment is extended an additional 60 days from the last day of the event.
Alabama Twisters Basketball Club Awards Banquet
Each year in August the club will celebrate the end of the Spring season by presenting awards to outstanding players/coaches/and parent volunteers. Each team's coaching staff will select players to receive these individual awards for outstanding achievement during the year. Awards will be the responsibility of each teams coaches/parents. Each team will be expected to participate in this yearly event and each team will be expected to contribute an amount determined by the officers/board of directors to cover banquet costs.
It is not the clubs intention to give every player a participation award at this banquet. Participation awards should be given out at the teams end of the year parties.
The ATBC Website is available to those with Internet access. It will be used to give the players and parents access to information about your club players and upcoming events. Because the Website can be seen world wide it will be a useful tool to locate tournaments, and keep up with practice and game schedules. From time to time photos of players will be displayed on the Internet. Our Website will also feature a sponsors page to promote businesses that support our club. The Website address is located at: alabamatwisters.com
